Apulian Wine

Although the wine production have remained unknown for long time, Apulia has a proud wine-culture of the most ancient tradition that dates back to the ancient Greeks. Apulia's land since the time of the early colonizations have been a sanctuary for the vineyards and the olive groves. Apulia is the region where "spring was eternal" as Homer reported, with climate conditions that have favoured the abundance and the variety of fine wines.

Cultivation of vineyards probably started with the colonization by the Greeks in the 8th century B.C.. gaining a true moment of glory with the romans, until the eventual fall of the Roman Empire determined the inevitable decline of Apulia's wine-making.

Only with the 7th century we note a rebirth in wine-culture and the return of autoctonic vines. Puglia use to be granary of Italy and the wine cellar of Europe, with its huge bulk wine production, but with the re-cultivation that followed, the emphasis is now placed on quality rather than quantity, for long time used to reinforce weaker wines all over the country. Now few local producers turned from high volume production to quality wine by reducing the yields and increasing the density of plantations gaining a growing reputation to the local production.

The range of Apulian wines is dominated by the reds, from the Salice Salentino to the primitivo di Manduria, that matures precociously, and the Malvasia nera di Lecce, from which full bodied vintages are produced. Some interesting and elegant white wines are also produced around Locorotondo and all around the Salentina peninsula from Verdeca, Chardonnay and Fiano just to name few.
